I won’t shop today because I’m cooking Thanksgiving dinner for out-of-town guests. Believe it or not, I’ll miss Black Friday. I’ll miss that rebel feeling of standing in the cold darkness with an eager crowd of sleepy and overbright shoppers, while sensible people sleep in warm beds. I’ll miss the party atmosphere, the excited chatter, the comaraderie of like-minded bargain hunters. I’ll miss the mass hysteria that grips people when there is a bin of hugely discounted items, or an announcement on the P.A. system that such-and-such is on sale in aisle 6. Then everyone stampedes to aisle 6. Black Friday is like a big carnival and shoppers are children once more.
